This ‘makes a statement’ diamond lizard is of fairly recent manufacture, probably from Thailand or Hong Kong, inspired by the lizard brooches that were popular at the end of the 19th century – though few as spectacular as this one. Modern-day manufacturers very often help us by putting diamond weights on their pieces, so I can tell you that the main body of the lizard is pave-set with 8 carats of diamonds, whilst the two marquise-cut diamond eyes weigh 0.28 cts. The total weight is 36.9 grams-just over once Troy ounce. Although manufacturing quality is high in these areas, manufacturing costs are low, hence the remarkably reasonable cost of this spectacular piece. The diamonds are set in dark oxidised 18ct white gold, beautifully finished on the back in a pierced lattice pattern. The lizard is 3 3/4 inches: 95 mm in length, and would liven up any party!
