An unusually fine brooch commemorating the Coronation of Edward VII in 1902. Thes brooches were largely made in silver, and probably produced in large quantities, although few survive. It is very unusual to find one of this size and quality, however. The brooch across is 2 1/2 inches: 65 mm. The 1902 date is set with rose-cut diamonds, and the E R – Edwardus Rex – in sapphires and rubies. I have not tested the gold, but with a brooch of this quality, I would expect it to be 15ct, almost invariably used on better quality pieces at this time.
