Description

This is an unusually large fob seal, originally made to be worn on a man’s watch chain, attached to a large ring, and you can see how the ring has slightly worn away the top loop. The seal tests as 15ct, and is gold throughout – many seals of this period are metal heavily gold-cased. Of oval form, it dates from around 1790 – later seals are usually oblong. The base is a fine cornelian intaglio of a bearded man wearing a skull-cap, from the front of which escapes a boldly curling forelock. The seal is approximately 1 1/2 inches : 40 mm in height, and the oval bases measures 1 3/8 x 1 1/8 inches: 34 x 28 mm
