French .835 second standard silver bangle in the Japonaiserie style cast with dragons and bamboo circa 1875. The craze for Japanese-inspired textiles, art and objects was inspired by Arthur Lazenby Liberty of the famous London department store visiting Japan in the 1860s and bringing back a large collection of Japanese prints, fabrics and artefacts for sale in his store.

They became wildly fashionable and inspired the taste for all things Japanese and this extended to France where this bangle was made. It also inspired Gilbert & Sullivan’s comic opera ‘The Mikado’ a skit on Japanese life and customs.
