This striking Mermaid pendant is a product of the 19th revival of jewellery of the 16th century Renaissance period when fantastical creatures were popular motifs in jewellery and the arts. Many pieces once thought to be from the Renaissance period were more recently identified as being late 19th century. They often feature natural baroque pearls, and the jewel is designed around the pearl’s natural shape, in this case forming most of the Mermaid’s upper body. The rest of the piece is silver, with a veneered gold backing, and a garnet drop. Judging by her slightly Art Nouveau features, I would date this circa 1900.
